Cooking and writing, for me, have always been about exploration. Both provide opportunities for new experiences and new ideas. Both have introduced me to new ways of seeing the world.
As a journalist, I write about the increasingly complex issues surrounding food in 21st century America. People need to understand what's happening to their food and - as a result - to them. Governments, corporations, retailers, marketers, and farmers all make decisions about the food we eat; it's important that we as consumers understand the decisions that are being made about what is arguably the most important thing we do every day. We can't afford to put these decisions entirely in the hands of organizations that treat food solely as a commodity. We must be better informed, and it is my job to help people do just that.
